In October, 23 volunteer workers, 10 medical staffers from Severance Hospital, actor Park Sung Woong, actress Lee Tae Ran, actor Kim Hyuk, and 2PM’s Nichkhun and Taecyeon went to an island in Tanzania to do volunteer work for two weeks. When the volunteer group arrived on the island, which is five hours away from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, they had to remove their footwear to cross mud flats to reach dry land, trudging along with heavy backpacks, and of course, 2PM’s Nichkhun and Taecyeon were no exception.
In addition, some of their daily necessities had not made it to the islannd, so the volunteers had to make their own chopsticks with twigs and cut up used plastic bottles to use as bowls. They also had to stay in tents on sandy ground for two weeks, and because water was in short supply, they had to live on 1.5 liters of water a day.
Nichkhun was especially surprised as he realized how serious a shortage of water can be. He personally went to get some water for the volunteer workers. Riding on the river in a boat for eight hours looking for water, he ran into trouble when the boat stopped in the middle of the river.
Nichkhun says, “I was surprised by the fact that people on this island have take a boat for eight hours to get water. I want to help the people who suffer from lack of water and electricity.”
